Although studies indicate that most oral diseases can be prevented in the United States, Blacks still have more dental problems than Whites, according to the Office of Minority Health of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Compared to Whites, Blacks have the highest number of untreated cavities, are more likely to have teeth extracted, suffer from gingivitis, a gum disease that causes swelling and bleeding, and have a higher rate of periodontal loss of attachment, which causes teeth to fall out. Black males have an even higher rate of mouth and throat cancer compared to other groups.

Because of the many oral problems facing Blacks, dental professionals recommend that patients have regular dental exams. "Prevention is the key, and the key to the prevention is education," says Dr. William B. Butler, D.D.S., dean of the School of Dentistry of Meharry Medical College, Nashville, TN.
